Discover where to eat

The area boasts some wonderful pubs and restaurants, as well as interesting places to buy locally produced cider and cheese. Bring a healthy thirst and appetite!

Here’s a list of a few of our local pubs where we have eaten as a family. We have included those which we have tried at some time or another, but of course there are lots more in the area locally – we can’t get around them all! Please ask us for our recommendations.

Mendip Inn
Bar and Restaurant
Gurney Slade
Tel: 01749 841703

We say, “It’s the closest pub and restaurant to your barn conversion at only 1 country mile away or 5 minutes by car, you could even walk there in the summer time. Consistently very good food, plenty of tables to choose from, you can dine in the bar area or the restaurant, your choice it’s the same fair prices for either, we love their sharing board for two, don’t forget to choose a bottle of wine as well.”

Hartley’s Kitchen
Rookery Farm
Tel: 01749841718

We say, “Amazing high quality breakfasts and unlimited coffee! Super lunches from celebrated cookery writer and larger than life Paul Hartley, don’t judge this book by its cover you might not be able to put it down once you start, only a 5 minute drive or 1.0 country mile from your barn conversion.”

Blostins Restaurant
29-33 Waterloo Road
Shepton Mallet
Tel: 01749 343648

We say, “It’s probably the nearest bistro around here, it’s quite cosy when you enter the door, but at the same time very welcoming. Blostins Restaurant has been run by the current owner for over 20 years now, it’s a time honoured restaurant, offering good value for money, 5 country miles or 10 minutes from your barn conversion.”

Goodfellows at Wells
5 Sadler Street
Tel: 01749 673866

We say, “It’s the only true seafood restaurant in the area, and well worth a visit for a lovely evening out. Push the boat out and try the taster menu, reserve your table in the window and watch the world go by in Wells, or sit next to the open plan kitchen. Make sure you raid the piggy bank before you visit here, 5 country miles away from your barn conversion 10 minutes by car.

The Oakhill Inn
Fosse Road
Tel: 01749 840442

We say, “This pub offers excellent food and drink only 5 minutes’ drive, 1.5 country miles from your barn conversion, often fully booked at the weekends, so book in advance, a great place for that special meal. Even a really good pub just for drinkies as well, get there early doors, before it gets busy.”

The George Inn
Long Street
Tel: 01749 342306

We say, “This small lovely family run traditional 17th century pub in the heart of the village, provides real home cooked food and offers a good selection of quality beers and local ciders, check their website site for their regular food events, at only 2.5 country miles from your barn conversion or 5 minutes by car, you could even stroll down the back lanes to this pub in the summer time maybe?”

The Ploughboy Inn
Green Ore

We say, “Good simple value pub grub, unfortunately they do not take bookings so get there early!”

Ask Restaurant
Market Place

We say, “A good place to eat with reasonable prices. If you’re lucky you may be able to get a table overlooking the Bishops’ Palace moat, if not it will be overlooking the historic market place. A good start to a night out in Wells! 5 country miles away from your barn conversion 10 minutes by car.”!/restaurants/wells
